I went to the drags this month at Western Sydney International Dragway and took heaps of photos of heavy metal! One of the problems I seem to have is when taking photos of chrome I get too many highlights. I turn the white balance down, still have problems. I am now only using raw as I can't see the need to set different curves in my camera when I can just override them in Capture. I have also just downloaded Picasa 2. WOW! What a great program for the price! It is so easy to self extract photos when combined with Flikr. The photo that I have posted has come straight from Picasa 2 without any touching up. And it actually looks better than the original in raw. Is this because when you convert from raw to Jpeg, you loose some qualities from the shot, which in my case has actually decreased the highlights? Looking through a lot of shots on this site and only been a newbie, without the right to criticize (yet!), some of these shots look out of focus, not sharp and pixilated. Is there any way to upload a picture without loosing any of its qualities?

The only way you can get rid of those highlights in the camera is to put the bike into a white tent. Nice pic anyway. You have filled the frame and focussed the interest in the subject.

Photo looks great - edit out the stand or something behind the saddle. Pity about the name tag....

From the thread title, I was expecting to see pictures of a conrod through the side of a block. I was pleasantly surprised, nice shot!

The only other problem is your reflection in the chrome (and other reflections). It's always going to be a problem taking photos of shiny things though I suppose! Have you seen that picture of a shiny kettle on ebay with the reflection of the nude fat bloke taking the photo clearly visible?

Oh and LOZ, just because you think you're a 'newbie', doesn't mean you can't critique others' photos, if you think you can offer something, by all means post!

I like the composition and I'm perverse enough to actually like it WITH the tag since it creates some context.
