Macro - Depth of Field - Head vs Body

At f8, I can only get the head in focus.
The only way to get the whole subject in focus is by positioning subject parallel to film plane.

That's the nature of macro. Often can't get enough depth of field. When you focus try focussing half way into your subject to maximize the depth of field...but be prepared to be frustrated by the little you have.

Is there a maximum F-value on macro lenses or is it just that you end up requiring shutter speeds that are hold to hold steady?

Platinum, most of the Nikkor macros go down to f32 (bigger number = smaller hole or aperture) which means a slower shutter speed. A lot of other lenses don't go as high eg the 50mm 1.4 only goes to f16. A larger number means greater depth of field, smaller number means shallower depth of field

That is why I shoot f14 or up to f22 when doing macro. Then you need to use a flash though.
