Quite contrary to my shooting style (Candids and landscapes) I have decided to play with product shots...
This is one of my first attempts at stock/product photography...
Sb-80DX bounced off the roof, shot using a 50/1.4 @ f/11 1/40s (manual)

MHD,
It's nice and sharp! great shot of the product!
Is it the servo of the 70-200VR?

How often do you try preset WB?

As I dont use RAW (still yet to implement a solution under LINUX) so I use PRE almost 100% of the time...
Before I start shooting I fire some shots to get exposure comp right (If shooting A or S) and then do a PRE on WB...
I find, if done right, PRE WB works very well....

Totally agreed with preset WB, even in RAW/ NEF, I'm happy with the way the Expodisc handles the preset WB. Why should I use auto WB?

MHD... re your shot, here's some feedback... most product shots that I see of parts etc tend to have the whole item in focus... also am thinking that with a light tent (or even a sheet of white paper above the item?) you could remove the shadows in the shot. Other than that I think your composition is great.
Michael.

Agreed there MJ.... One of the things I want to do is build a light tent...
My SB-80DX was on full power so I could not use a higher F-number however the roof was high so hopefully with a tent I could use a higher f number as I will get more light...

One of the most useful accessories for this kind of subject is a sheet of white cardboard or foam-core. Place it off to the side where the shadows accurr and it will bounce a nice soft light and diminsh the shadows. Otherwise a great shot!

What others have said is true - I have been shooting products for the past 11 years using a cocoon, now with Bowens Trilites but the 2 shots below were using a strobe with softbox.
Cheers

I have seen strobe setups on ebay (busy bees etc...)
its a whole different world
So what is one of the simplest ways to set up a light tent?
