Hey Guys,

This is the first shot I've taken with my new Sigma 70-300mm Super Macro II. I am really impressed with the results of this - handheld.

Really great image.

I might have liked to see a bigger depth of field so the front petals were in focus also... would that be possible with this lens?

I love the colour though, fantastic.

Is the lens you used this one:

Sigma 70-300APO AU$305.00 (Form the Bargain section)

Or is it a different lens?

Hey,

That was with the aperture wide open F5.6 at 300mm.
I think its a great lens for $225 and will start me on my learning curve for tele zooms.

Thanks for the comments guys.

Woody,

its not the APO version.
It's the DL version. I read somewhere that the DL was actually a little sharper than the APO although the colour repro was better on the APO. I went for the DL in the end and am quite happy with it.

That was with the aperture wide open unfortunately so that's as deep as it's going to get. F5.6 at 300mm.

Question on this lens then: To use it in Macro mode do you ned to have it at 300mm???

Sorry if this is a dumb question but I have not used a macro lens before (or telephoto with macro).

I actually quite like that the depth of field is a little shallow, for the petals closest to the lens. However I do wish that the entire center yellow piece was sharp. Still a great shot though.

The macro switch only functions at 200mm + so you need to be between 200-300mm to use the macro. Minimum focussing distance is about 0.95m as well i think.

Woody asked if the Depth of field could have been increased. Since the shot was taken wide open @ 5.6 I'd have to say probably ... with F8 or F11 or even F22 the petals would have been in focus.

A great shot, amazing colour reproduction and very sharp. Puts a new spin on the humble flower.

Yes thats right. I got a wee bit mixed up. i thought he meant a shallower DOF.
