These two I shot at the aptly named Featherdale Park earlier this week.

They're an owl and an eagle

Our resident ornithologists are welcome to fill in the blanks...

As far as I know (no comments) the only Hawk Owl we have here in Aust with a yellow beak is a Barking Owl - Ninox connivens

Now your eagle photo is actually a Brahminy Kite -Milvus indus (Haliastur indus in some references)

Excellent clarity in both photo's, esp the Owl
The Owls eyes really makes this shot.

I am wondering if its a BooBook Owl... although they are so similar that it could be almost either really...

I think that both of these images are brilliant... very good quality and they certainly wouldnt look out of place in a bird book...

The feathers around the eyes dont look like a BooBook. Also of the 5 sub sp. of BooBook, the only 1 that has yellow eyes is race leucopsis and that has more of a dark feathers marking around the eyes. Race lurida is the closest BooBook colouring to this, but the yellow beak suggests to me the northern darker form of the Barking Owl

Steffen. I don't know much about the birds, but I know a good image when I see one and these are crackers. #1 in particular is a standout.

I love them both.

The owl, for the reasons already noted, but in the image of the kite you have beautifully controlled the exposure of the white feathers on the neck and head. This image has a very high contrast range, and you have reigned it in magnificently.

Thanks all for your kinds words, and for putting me straight on the eagle vs kite thing :oops:

Photography has become slightly less frustrating since I had my AF module replaced the other week... :wink:
