The substrate seems to have a crystalline structure. Possibly hexagonal. It is also apparently flat in the larger context. I am thinking some form of coating on a larger surface, but grown rather than sprayed on.

There appears to be fluid on the substrate surface in the shadow of the white object, and there appear to be bubbles within it, so I am thinking the ice guess is good.

So my guess would be an ice grain in a non stick frypan.

can you tell me, (since I have never tried macro), is this somehting that can be done with a 105mm, or do you need extra layers of glass to get this close, and detailed?

Thanks for your comments. Some technical data below:

Lenses = Micro Nikkor 105mm 2.8D + Nikkor 50mm 1.8D (reversed)
Focal Length = ??
Aperture = f/40 (on 105mm) & f/1.8 (on 50mm)
Shutter Speed = 1/60 sec.
ISO Rating = 100
Magnification ratio = About 3:1
Flash = Nikon SB800 in wireless mode (bounced from a white cardboard)

Achieving such a high magnification ratio does require a custom setup. I don't think there are lenses that can focus to more than 2:1 on their own. I will post details of the setup (with some pictures) later when I get time.
