Three new panoramas i shot on St Valentines day.

The first is at 24mm with the kit lens.


The second is at 50mm with the 50mm 1.8 at F8.


The third is at 50mm with the 50mm 1.8 at F8 and 89b Infra-Red filter, converted to B&W. I've never seen an IR pano before so i though i'd do one. I'm not entirely happy with the result though so i will have to do some more. Perhaps with more trees in them.


My personal preference is the 24mm shot as it tends to distort in a pleasing way. You can tell the difference between the 24mm and 50mm by comparing the difference of distortion. I think 18mm distorts just a little too much with 24 being a nice compromise between the true size image at 50mm and wider angle.

Killa - great images. I must say I prefer the 24mm as well. Great capture - and to go IR with Pano - good thinking. I would love to see a large printed version.

How big were the files before you resized for web display?

Depends on what you're taking a pano of Killa. If you have structural objects such as the docks, and boats in the foreground, then yes 18MM is a bit too short a focal length. However if you use an 18MM and the subject is a fair distance away then to me it doesn't really show much distortion. For instance the (crap) pano of Port solent that I did, didn't really have much in the foreground so there isn't much distortion, neither is the case for North Yorkshore. However if you look at the Fareham Creek pano, the subjects in the foreground look distorted.

Kipper, i absolutely agree with you and i can tell you that i nearly always do panos at different focal lenghts so i can see which looks best. That photo of the Nth Yorks was really nice BTW.

Sec was 33.795 meg
IR was 15.360 meg after B&W conversion

I would love to print it out but alas my Canon i590 does not do continuous roll paper.

I love pano's and I agree with you Killa that the 24mm is the pick. Shame about the wall in the foreground, but obviously that's a result of the location the shot was taken from.

Yes, I agreed, if you have the 24/f2.8, it'll be excellent on pano, light, prime, and it's a pano lens.

I intend to do another one without the wall there. Problem was that the best vantage point to get the bridge, the opera house and the Oriana was where i took that photo from. If i move a bit further to the left there is no wall but on the day the bridge was obscured by the boat. I would like a few clouds in the sky too. I am very tempted to try this at sunset and after dark, but i might need a bodyguard as it's a bit dodgy up there at night especially with 1000's of dollars worth of really cool gear.

Really nice panos Killa but I would tend to describe the distortion as perspective with vanishing point

Killa, great. It is good to see someone using that extended walkway and lift. I think the 24mm works well here too. I have a manual 28mm 2.8 which you are free to borrow if you like or Birddys. You wont need a bodyguard with my manual lens

Thanks for the offer of the borrow of the lens fellows. I may or may not take you up on the offer. I will see how i feel on the day, i do act spontaneously so might not be able to 'plan' it.

I'm guessing you took this from Circular Quay station platform 2 rather than the extended walkway Glen is referring to on the Cahill Expressway?

The lift for the extended walkway is further down behind the Arc coffee shop at the end of the wharves to the right of the pano. It's higher up than the station and doesn't have a stone wall IIRC.

It's been a while since I worked at the quay so correct me if I'm wrong.

Very nice Panorama of a location that well deserves one - Cahill exp, on CQuay is a great location for urban harbour shots, which is why I'd pick the first shot 24m kit lense as there's more movement of this fact visible + the complete building aignment is a nice touch off the border.

I took a similair subject a few nights ago as there's been some big ships over the holidays in the harbour, and must say taking an exposure foto at night on the expressway can be tricky as trains and car traffic move the whole structure a fair amount.

Great pano's and it's interesting to see the differences between the 24mm and 50mm lengths... Like the 24mm pano out of these...

Looking forward to seeing the results of your next one at sunset... Im a sucker for a good pano and these are terrific.
