Please note that this is not an area for you to showcase your images, nor is this a place for you to show-off where you have been. This is an area for you to post images so that you may share with us a technique that you have mastered, or are trying to master. Typically, no more than about four images should be posted in any one post or thread, and the maximum size of any side of any image should not exceed 950 px.

Please note that image critiquing is a matter of give and take: if you post images for critique, and you then expect to receive criticism, then it is also reasonable, fair and appropriate that, in return, you post your critique of the images of other members here as a matter of courtesy. So please do offer your critique of the images of others; your opinion is important, and will help everyone here enjoy their visit to far greater extent.

Also please note that, unless you state something to the contrary, other members might attempt to repost your image with their own post processing applied. We see this as an acceptable form of critique, but should you prefer that others not modify your work, this is perfectly ok, and you should state this, either within your post, or within your signature.

Images posted here should conform with the general forum guidelines. Image sizes should not exceed 950 pixels along the largest side (height or width) and typically no more than four images per post or thread.

Please also ensure that you have a meaningful location included in your profile. Please refer to the FAQ for details of what "meaningful" is.

this needs to be done in a series but we're only allowed 4 pics so since there will be quite a few pics i'll do them as clickable thumbnails ...
if you want to see the larger size just click on it.
hope this is OK mods...

Thats so cool. Thats something I could see being used in some kind of educational publication. It does so well outlining the whole process.

Shane,

This is clearly an instance where more than four images are needed to illustrate what you're doing, and in those instances, it is acceptable to bend the rules.

And if you're in doubt, please feel free to ask any of the mods.

Great series, well done.

Can you please explain the technique that you used for this?

Excellent Cicada series.
We've got the Red-Eye Cicadas going through this around here at the moment. Last year I got heaps of good photo's

i used the Pentax K10D and FA100/2.8 macro hand held with the Pentax AF540FGZ flash so i could use F18 to get it all in focus.

i tried a difuser but the pics were too dark so i just moved back a bit to help spread the light then cropped all the pics about 50%

these are straight from camera JPEGs with some sharpening.

we were in the middle of a Xmas Party so i could just lean over every now and then and grab a pic when something changed.

over about an hour most of the people came up to have a look at what all the flashing was as another guy had some tubes and a flash on his canon and there was a small crowd around at all times.

was a good way to pass the time 8)
