I was in Brisbane last night and wanted to find a good spot to photograph the Storey Bridge with the city in the background.

Went over to New Farm and found a spot at around 6pm and it just wouldn't get dark. This shot was at 7 pm and I couldn't afford to wait any longer.

Also there wasn't too many lights on in the city being a Sunday Night and Christmas Holidays and all.

As I don't have my L bracket for the D3 yet I was limited to handheld and it was raining intermittently

This shot was taken with the 14-24mm at 21mm handheld 1/10sec; 2.8 and ISO 400

I am posting it for the purpose of gathering information from you night shooters out there so I can nail this shot next time I go to Brisbane. e.g. techniques, settings, time of day and venues for this type of shot.

Also I am wondering about the virtue of a panorama stitch versus wide angle shot. Any views on this?

looks pretty cool

there is a walkway straight below and you can get a pretty good view looking upward at the bridge from it.
where the floating walkway meets the solid ground is a solid platform to shoot from.
a tripod is best but we just sat the camera on the ground last time we did a shoot there.

Oooh where were you when you took this shot Bob?.. I thought it was all private property along there...

as to where.. see that road below you.. you can walk along it to a pier type thingy where you have a good vantage point of the birdge and city lights etc for shooting.. personally though I think that your spot is better.. (I'll have a hunt and see if I can find the bridge shots we took when a few of us had a go at it a few months ago for you so you can see the difference.. perspective wise that is)..

as for times.. well dusk is always good.. and generally more lights (and riff raff) out on a Fri and Sat night..

as for settings.. I could probably tell you which ones NOT to use.. sad but true.. others will have better advice for you on that one though..

oh and btw.. gorgeous image.. love the fact that there is still so much colour in the sky!

I can't remember the Street Names - but just head out of the Valley along Brunswick Street and turn right at the second or third street which will take you onto a one way street (might be Bowen Terrace or something like that) there is a grassy strip between the road and the cliff which flows into a little park eventually. I was down on the fence line near some palms about halway along the grassy strip.

and here are a couple of on the pier thingy... not half as good as yours but will show you the different vantage point.. oh btw.. I think the widest lens I had with me at the time was a 18mm.. *cries*..
will have to go back with the 10mm I think..

That is killer, I love the crazy saturated sky. It is funny for me because Newfarm is the only part of Bris that I have ever spent time in, so it is like I only ever see that side

Bob, good stuff, and I have also seen another photographer (who moved his retail space to the Q1 in the Gold Coast I think) doing a shot of the Storey Bridge at around the same place but closer and it was of the fireworks for either the New Years or the Riverfire, that place looks great but I've never been.

Although I do know where Bindii went though, I've been to that Kangaroo point place and the Riverside walkway to Newfarm bridge many times, and I know that it's not a stable place to put your tripod on... Especially when City Cats blast past...

I forgot to take mine and had to contend with laying down and trying to keep the damn camera still on the ground.. lol...

Here it is - Wilson's Outlook Reserve. Just up the road from my place.

The TV channels often do live crosses from there during their weather broadcasts.

I can vouch for the fact that it is a great place for this type of shot.

When working in Brisbane I stay in a motel just across the road from the Story bridge pub so I can have a beer or 4

Grev, the pontoon that Bindii describes is actually a fixed concrete structure and does not move. SteveGriffin, Big Red and myself were there the same night she got her shots and tripods were certainly the go for Steve and I. (Can't remember if Shane had one..)

Bob - Here's one of mine (I think from memory I was using Steve's 12-24):

i was another one who had to use the concrete tripod ... must have had a few funny looks at us laying on the ground taking pics of the bridge

Yes, that is the Kangaroo point side of the river, on the other side is the bridge thingy where it wiggles.

Okay folks, I may as well add my ten cents worth here (or is it one shilling) This fine image was taken from Bowen Terrace looking across to the city in 1898. The Storey Bridge came from Kangaroo Point on the left and NO I did not take this photo' Customs House dome can be seen across the river. About the only landmark recognisable. By the way Bob. I really like your image here.
