My first image post on this forum, feel free to c&c. I'd put that in my sig but haven't worked out how to add one yet

The first is a foreign species on my block, up close much nicer than the second 2. The second two are the local native red variety.

Taken with the 105 2.8D and D200. I use a homemade diffuser about 12" wide on SB600 (+3)

They are very nice shots. Great depth of field, great colour and that home made diffuser does great spreading the light and removing shadows.
What does the difuser look like?

Here's a couple of links to pics of the diffuser. Made of white cardboard, tarzans grip, lined with alfoil and covered in florists white tissue, which is replaced pretty regularly. Spray painted black for class!
Does the business, most of my orchid macros are taken in the field with this, the first green Kangaroo Paw for example.
Flip over the SB600's inbuilt diffuser to help spread the light. +3 on the flash.

They are all really nice. The level of detail you have obtained is fabulous.

Great job on the kangaroo paw and great job on the diffuser/softbox. Did you follow a template for the cardboard bits or was it just trial and error? It is similar to my softbox but I really like how yours is on a 45º angle over the end of the lens. (Mine's not as neat as yours, either.)

Ha! Great minds think alike eh? I originally tilted it that was as my 50mm + Tubes was only an inch or so from the subject, and gives the option of just tilting up the flash head if req'd.
Just trial and error, made a roughy from a cornflakes packet and when it was right pulled it apart to use as a template. It's handy if the body is strong too.
The concept is the same for all of these designs and work pretty good, as you have discovered.

(Love the nautiloid avatar BTW, I have a nice pic of a nautiloid fssil in stone at Windjana Gorge)

wow, these look nothing at all like any of the Kangaroo Paws I photographed in WA in Sept/Oct last year, what particular species it it?

Sorry Gordon, no idea I'm afraid. There are hundreds of types as you know.
