Well being busy with all these weddings for the past few months, I wanted to unwind and just relax. What better way than go out there and take some pix. A favourite past time!
I decided to head to the city today and go to St. Mary's Cathedral armed with the 5D and my 16-35mm mkII. A bit of disappointment cause they seem to be doing some extensive renovation. But lo and behold the crypt was open. Never having been in there I might as well take a peek.
Anyhoo, funny thing it was well lit but I was wondering why I had to boost the iso at 3200 and was only getting like 1/4 shutter speed. It was only when I downloaded into the computer that I realise my aperture in the crypt was at f10 (kicked myself for something that stupid)
So anyway the pics below were all shot @ 3200iso, f10 and cleaned up with neatimage. Enjoy!

I am glad to learn I am not the only one using the wrong apperture or too a high ISO. Nevertheless, I think your pictures came out well without a tripod or flash. Suggestion, just remember that you can change the while balance, the F stops or play with the curves, if you want to experiment or if you are not all that happy with your results. Your pictures have the warmth of colour you get without using a flash, which in those places is not allowed.

Wow some serious cool pictures and cool architecture, least you know you can go back and shoot at slightly lower ISO and a more reasonable aperture not that they look that noisy, but a little clean would be better. I assume no tripods allowed right ?

I like these shots Ron. To obtain what you have with high iso is commendable. My only critique would be to give the pics some separation when posting so that they don’t run into each other

Hmmm.... this gives me some ideas for this weekend.

Craig: Yeah, I wouldnt really bring a tripod in the Cathedral esp the crypt since it is a burial site. I use to go to afternoon mass there during my lunch break and there is this deacon who use to tell tourist off (esp. Chinese/Japanese) because they didn't respect some areas where they didn't allow photography (A4 signs with camera and a red cross). Seriously he was in the back of my head when I was down there, expecting him to jump out and tell me off


Also I always thought the 5D had such a quiet shutter but when I was down there, its pretty loud.

Graveyards are also burial grounds, would you feel uncomfortable with a tripod there ? (Just wondering, out of interest, not having a go).

Holy crap.. those shots are friggin awsome..I'm now seriously contemplating checking that joint out now. Well done.

I think these are great - the perspective of the last one stands out for me (very Escher-ish...)

Bit of a difference with public graveyards and private crypts such as these. You have to remember your a visitor and it is a place of worship.
One must be aware of the proper respect when visiting places of worship.
Of course this just doesnt apply in this particular case. The Buddhist temple in the Gong is one such place where certain buildings doesn't allow photography esp. The Pagoda. Also a hindu temple I visited didn't allow photography and I also had to take my shoes off.

Anyway regarding the use of a tripod in there. Personally, I wouldn't carry one and decide to set it up in that place...but maybe a Gorillapod would suffice

Number Two really catches my eye. The humanoids are a distraction - cant help that though.

Makes me want to go back into a church again its been a while.

#'s 1 & 4 for me. I think the lighting and feel of the images are outstanding.

Never thought about there being a crypt, I now want to go.

They pics look great. I love the golden tinge to all of them. From memory they have been repairing the crypt over time lately and from the photos it looks like it's all done and done well.

Nice shots though, considering the specs you've done really well.

Thanks folks. I was thinking of 'cooling' down the image but the warm light I think adds to the atmosphere. By all means go and look around. The tiles are really something to look at.
