Bought my daughter a cheap bunch of flowers (she always wants some when I buy some for Mrs rflower).
She could only have them on the condition, I could take photo's of them ...

Nikon D80. 18-200. 1/160 @ f16.
36mm or 20mm Kenko macro ring
Fired SB-800 wirelessly (using onboard flash) @ 1/8 - 1/32 power.






These are straight out of the camera. No PP done except for resizing and converting to jpg in ViewNX

Any tips on taking flowers? as macros?
What about flash position / strength?

couple of suggestions...

try balancing ambient light with flash light. in this case your aperture is too small and/ or your flash speed in too fast. if you want the small aperture, shoot the image much much slower and bump up your iso a little. it will give the lighting a much more balanced look. flash will give you lots of detail even with larger apertures. if you shot that flower again at f8, 1/50s, iso 400, (at a guess), i think you will be more pleased with the image you get out.

i'm guessing that you shot this in more vivid mode which defaults to colour mode IIIa. having been a previous happy owner of the d80, i can tell you that reds become far too oversaturated with this mode and you lose alot of detail so try shooting in colour mode Ia or II and you will get far better colour rendition, especially for reds.
