I headed down to Canberra last monday. It was good practice for the fast action shots. Not to mention great to see some of the best riders in world. I've only cropped these. C&C always appreciated.

Great shots nice and sharp.
Maybe next time shots like the first could look even better with some fill flash- but still looks good. I like the shadow in the first- can you use it more in the uncropped version?
Robert

The crops are really tight, I can't help but think they might look better a little bit looser... showing where they are going to or coming from.
I just feel that these shots look really static and don't convey any sense of speed or danger.

Hi Glennles,
nice to see your fotos - there was some amazing MTB action.
The 2nd day I went, I mostly shot with the sun behind and above me - that way
I had a more even exposure on the objects.
I need to practise fill-flash to get better results when the sun is straight above or behind the object.
Pls show us a few more,
CD

Thanks for the comments guys.
James, I agree with your comments about the cropping. One of the challenges I found was that I'd get those orange poles in the foreground of my shots. I tried to stay behind the bunting so I didn't freak the riders out. I'll try some different crops. Thanks for the tip
I did try to use some fill flash during the actual race runs but found I was a bit far away to get any effect. Some of the juniors and girls came in closer to me and it seemed to work ok.
I have the rest of the set at

Pocketwizards
I have a mate who is really into shooting mtb, he cranks pocketwizards a fair bit.
His name is Stephen Hillenbrand, has quite a bit of published work within the MTB scene.

I had a feeling you'd say that
I have seen Stephen's work in various magazines. Him and a guy called Damian Breach are a couple of the guys always in mags. Both have a style that uses lots of flash.
Time to start saving

Here's the original of the first picture, straight out of the camera and a raw conversion.

The trail of dust in the FF version really adds to the movement of the scene. I can understand your crop of the orange pole- it might be worth cloning that one out and the one that looks like it has speared him!!
Its a good shot and might be worth the effort,
Robert
