Shane,

The composition of the first is brilliant. The eye contact and the background help this shot. For me, the shot is let down by two things:
* the debris on the frog's right hand
* the harsh lighting which is causing multiple bright highlights

The second one is nice and sharp but doesn't jump out. I'm not really sure why. Perhaps it is the harsh lighting again. I must admit, I have never really got a good shot of that species of frog.

The third one looks a little soft to me. This may again be the lighting.

1* i think it was a grass seed
* i used a diffuser but couldn't bounce the flash off anything... i don't think the shiny skin helps

2*i didn't like the composition and the frog had tucked its legs in but it does give a good DOF and shows most of the Frog.

3* this was the first pic and i only had F8 and was only 50 -75 mm away but by the time i changed he had tucked up ... this is still my favorite of him.

thanks for the comments 8)

Yeah, the shiny skin can be a real problem. I tried all sorts of things like small diffusers and kept having problems until someone suggested a softbox. A Google search found a couple of simple DIY designs and an hour later I had not only a paper prototype, but a cardboard one that I have using for a couple of months. It is amazing how much difference it makes, especially for frogs. My softbox
