well I went, I saw, and while I didn't conquer I had fun trying ..

Hand held 400D 70-300 manual settings 10 feet back from the wire ..but good enough to make my 7 year old happy ..

Hey Deb,

Nice image. The angle you've caught the car at is good. You could always increase the shutter speed slightly at that angle because the wheel motion will be less obvious, especially with that sort of rim. (To explain, some of the cars have 6 spoke rims, some have ones like this car. Rims like this are easier to make look blurred as each 'spoke' requires less distance to move to blur).

The image will look better with some PPing, such as saturation increase, brightness and contrast, along with some sharpness. I've played around a bit I can post to show what I mean if you would like.

Deb, nice exposure on the flame and given the weather today you have done well. Just shows that with a little effort good results can be achieved from behind the fence. RobW will not be happy that you did not photograph the girls

Deb, this is what I've done to your image:



An increase in brightness and contrast, with the saturation pumped up a fair bit also. Some sharpness thrown in also.

You can see the focal point is behind the front passenger door, with the rear third of the car sharper than the front. Where were you focusing?

Tell me to remove the image and I will if you'd rather I didn't stuff about with it.

feel free to play - I posted as shot (just reduced the file size ).. I was focusing manually and know I missed the sweet spot as it's not that crisp , my timing was off and it was drissling at the time, so it will be good to see what improvements can be made.
I take your point re shutter speed and will have ago next time but I have taken shots in the past where things were that frozen they looked suspended (I have a great set of planes on string from air shows) so I was actually trying to keep some movement.
This was attempt #1 at car racing so happy to learn for next time .

I do have several really sharp shots but they look rather uninteresting so I posted this one because I was happy with the flame, heat distortion and reflection which I think makes it a bit more interesting than just another car picture ...but not knowing one car from another don't really know what makes a good car shot .

Keep the advice coming I look forward to some great shots from tomorrow

Hi DebT, not a bad shot and almost looks like it was taken at the corner where that big tree is, forgot name of streets as we shot there 2 years ago as it was bloody hot and even better with the shade of the tree on the fence which helps getting focus on the other side so if sun is shining on the fence dont bother. Well done though as this is another year i wont be comming to Adelaide for it
