Just Muckin' Around (drags)

Just experimenting with some crops and angles..? Even threw in a HDR bike. I don't normally crop more than a few inches of any given side, as I feel I'm cheating if I take too much off..

I also noticed how other sports do the angled shots, which work well. Is it worth trying for the Drags? I'd also love to use my 18-70 or 12-24 to snap some nitro cars at night. Hoping to get the streak of flames all the way down the track, but not sure what shutter will be best.. Thinking around 8s? Will need to dust off the silly tripod though..

can i ask what shutter speed you used on the third one, i havnt been to a drag event but they sounded good from th v8s' the other day

It's important to 'muck around' as much as possible to try and find that unique shot.

The first two you have posted are too bright, and need a contrast increase, but I really like the closer crop and the angled shot. I'd love to see a REALLY tight shot of the Sainty, with the engine filling the frame, but panning and getting it tight and sharp would be bloody hard.

With regards to cropping, I can assure you it aint cheatin'. I watch the TOP motorsport photogs PPiing their images, and they crop very heavily (say 2/3rds of an image goes 'on the floor'). I guess when you've got 16 megapixels, you can afford to. That being said, I don't, so need to frame and shoot.

I've thought about that kind of shot also.Two things i think may hinder it are the lights at and around the staging area which are pretty bright and may make it difficult to do and the other is (and it's more an aesthetic thing )is that you can't get a shot straight down the middle because of the height of the crossover walkway .Which ,to me, would be the ideal spot .

Ras, I gave the first two a contrast hit, look much better. And yeah, 10 or 12 megapixels would be much nicer to have, as opposed to the 6 I got at the moment.. I'm even considering selling my 12-24 to put towards a D300... I don't use it very much ATM, but it's a tough decision as I'd probably miss it as soon as I get the new cam. Think I payed something like $1200-1400 for it.

Drifter, it sucks about the high wall, I've been kicked off a few bins along there before! Probably snap from the side or deep end, not sure yet, gonna have to muck around a bit till I find the sweet spot..

I would avoid selling the 12-24. I regret selling my short lens, because they are sooooo useful for detail shots, wide angle pans, inside turns (not that many a WSID though) and special effect shots. Just my humble worthless opinion
