2 x 2 Black and Whites

Two pairs of images. Again taken with my black and white CF card. I'd be particularly interested in your views of which tree shot has more appeal since I just can't choose between them.

I like the second tree it leads you up the trunk
The first has too much in it, too congested
and the b&w is great.

I prefer the second tree as well. In the first the wide landscape format does not seem to suit the subject.

Stubbsy, 3rd and 4th for me. I must say I am very impressed with you B&W, especially with the card, your superior skill shows through. Whilst I appreciate (especially with the D300!) the smaller file sizes with the B&W card, I do feel the images I took were a little flat compared to a colour conversion to B&W. Is that your take or do you find it similar?

Hyperhiryu, a black and white card. It utilises the technology seen in cameras like the D300 which allows them to record in B&W, but now it is in the UDMA controller in the card. Gives an arty look with no post processing and also substantially reduced file sizes. Also gives older cameras the benefit of this technology.

Peter, I'm going against the trend here. I like the 1st tree image, mainly because the trunk/foleage balance is more to my liking. I can understand why you had trouble choosing between them, they are both great shots.
B&W was an excellent choice for the two bridge shots, adds so much drama to the scene and the use of a person on the walkway in the first of these two makes this pic the best of the series for me. The leading lines are brilliant, not to mention the slice of ocean and distant cliffs and headlands, a well balanced shot.

can you give me a few brands/card models that are B&W cards, i have really fallen in love with B&W, esp since I got my D300 and would like to look into these cards a lil more

No1 for me. I like the composition. The eye doesn't necessarily need to go on a journey IMO. Nice stuff.
Can I ask though, what is the issue with converting from colour to B/W (in photoshop). What can a card do, or add, to an image that is absent from a colour shot converted?

Well - although not many listen to newbies, i like the first tree due to the balanced symmetrical view. The 2nd has the power lines that need to be p/s'd out and maybe crop the top off a smidge - that bulbuos blue (white) spot where the sky is, is distracting.

I like the 1st bridge image....shadows do it , but the shot looking back needs to be colour.

There is plenty of critique so far, but I would like to add that it is in my amateur civil engineering opinion that it would be a good thing that if you want anyone wants to take photos of that bridge then don't delay too long as I envisage it being washed into the sea sooner than the engineers who designed it think it will.

It is in NSW after all where roads and bridges are not built to last.

#1. The leaves create a pattern of their own and a pleasing effect, it isn't just a tree shot. #2 is a tree shot, very nice as it is.
