I don't get as much time to post & comment here as I wish but would appreciate some feedback on this shot best described as an anomoly. I was concentrating on getting a not so harsh flash effect, D50 with an SB800, angled at 45 deg and using the inbuilt bounce card. Subject very wary of my presence, bobbing about in the foliage and wanting to give the bottlebrush flower a good licking. Took a hurried shot as the lori stuck it's head out and focus fell on the flower. Does this shot work for you?

To be honest - no. The OOF bird is too prominent to elevate the flower

On it's own, not really.

But, if you had another couple of shots, one with the bird in focus, and another with it giving the flower a licking, it could make a fun series.

Agree with photohiker.. It's always good to concentrate on one subject per photo unless you are one of those geniuses who can layer the photo with interest and get away without people calling it too busy...

The flower is in focus, and the bird detracts from the flower. I have taken bucket loads of lorikeet images, I wouldn't worry about the flash if I was you. Try and capture them on a cloudy day as sunshine/shadows are your worst enemy. Lorikeets are hyperactive birds and thus are hard to photograph. Keep persevering with a high shutter speed and you'll have some good shots.
