the first is taken with a large softbox behind the background with a piece of red card infront of it with the cloth on top. the softbox is larger than the card so you end up with the rim lighting on the edges of the glass.
second was taken on a 6ft mirror with the biggest softbox i could find pointed down 45deg behind the glass, the only things you see in shot are the mirror and the glass with water.
no photoshop on these besides corrections like levels whitebalance finetuning the exposure and in the second cloning out the water on the mirror that splashed out of the glass.

I really like the second one, I like the lighting in the first, but not overly keen on the tabletop or the background.

Mate, they are brilliant. The second one is really striking. What kind of course are you doing?... like more specifically than 'photography' (before anyone says it
).

Thommo I agree with the others, your 2nd picture really stands out with the plain white background
Hope to see more of your pics through out your course

Lovely, I'm jealous. I've been trying to photograph glass with limited success for some time now. Looking at these, I think I need a bigger light source
The first one looks as if the glass is floating above the surface (courtesy of the shadow in front. Is this the intention, accidental, or just my eyes.

Not bad....I think the background in #1 is too strong and the grey table ruins the proportions of the composition. In #2 the fluid that runs off the top and bottom of the page weaken the composition a little. Your lighting is excellent.

Thanks Matt,
I struggled to get what i wanted in the first, i wanted the material to be out of focus and more a colour then a texture but because of where it was placed that was hard, Also i think the lighting on it could have been a bit better (this is an assesment piece), as there are some not so pleasent reflections on the edges.
Also in the second every time i look at it i see the softbox through the glass, i find it sorta funny.
