Hi thought I would post a few of my shots from the portrait workshop. Was my first meet, a great day.

I learnt a lot and was really happy with the shots I got from my D80/50mm f/1.8....until gary said here try my 85mm f/1.4!

Excellent portraits. I just love No. 2. The expression looks so natural and lighting is so even and subdued. I'm not sure if WB is a bit warm, but I quite like the way the skin tones came out.

Thanks Alex, 2 was taken with Garys 24-120 VR. Definately a bit warm I probably tweaked it a bit too much.

My big takeaway for the day was what a difference good lighting makes.

They look great to me , well done

I agree they are a little warm in the WB, I guess it depends what look you're aming for. #2 really stands out - great eye contact and posing. I think the last one suffers from the lighter background.

Mite be able to improve 1# and 2# with hair light

It is unlikely to be flickr and more likely to be your browser. Have you looked at the images with your browser while they're still on your hard disk? I'm pretty sure they will look the same. What colour space are you embedding?

Neither Internet Explorer nor Firefox 2.0 do colour management, i.e. they ignore embedded colour space and use "defaults". For many images you don't notice but for some images (usually ones with a lot of similar tones) you can really notice it and the images tend to look a tad overexposed. This happens even if you are using sRGB but would be worse if you are using a different colour space.

Apple Safari (which has a PC version) does do colour management and the three images here look slightly darker (and better in my opinion) with it compared to Firefox 2.0. Install a copy and see for yourself.

Thanks ATJ, tested Safari and it made no difference.

I also have an uncalibrated monitor just got a Spyder thingy and will try to calibrate it tonight and see how I go.

That is very strange. I can see an obvious difference in the three images when viewed with Safari versus Firefox 2.0.

What colour space do you have embedded?

#1 and #2 would benefit from a hair light to seperate her from the darker background.

#1 and #3 might be better with a closer crop as the top has a lot of dead space for a portrait.

The second one is a very striking shot.The third one looks like a pic that her mother would love to have.A nice pic for the family photo album.
