A few snaps from Sunday's annual Antique & Classic Aircraft Fly-in at Parafield Airport. Yet another very overcast day, seems to be the theme when I attend an airshow The flight shots were hand-held at 400mm, tried to keep the shutter a slow as I could to get some prop-blur but maintain a good hand-holding speed.

I've got another 13 or so images in my processing queue that I'll put up on my Pbase account when I get around to processing them later this week.

I would have to say that i am a fan of the vintage planes, love to take a step back in time and check out how far we have come...

It's unbelievable the amount of work that must go into restoring these aircraft, not only for presentation but for air-worthiness (if thats a word?)

That second image is good .... just enough motion blur to the propeller thingys to make it pop for me...

I'm not overly happy with the over overcast sky, but not much I can do about that one

Might be able to replace the sky with some work... Hmm some complex layer masks involved there...

Hmm...replacing the sky is tough on this one.. Here is my try and by no means perfect... [Let me know if you want me to take this down]
Also do the others have any ideas on how to replace this sky?

Thats not a bad effort at all! The sky looks great, probably just need to fiddle with the colour balance of the aircraft a little with a mask to remove the blue cast.

In my processing I tried separating the sky and aircraft for isolated brightness adjustments, but ran into trouble around the prop and it's blur. I couldn't adequately blend the two layers feathering the edges sufficiently enough in the blurred region. But I'm still fairly new to Photoshop, you've proven it can be done

A friend at work knows his way around photoshop pretty well and created this image by replacing the sky. It took him quite a while to clip around the guide wires.
It's tricky, but it is definitely worth the effort.

Thanks Daniel for sharing the link, the effort put into PP is well worth it for that image!, was this taken from this years show or a previous fly-in?

It's not a blue cast. It's the sky showing through the plane because my mask wasn't strong enough. I wasn't sure how to fix it as the mask was created by using the blue channel in this image...
