after seeing an effort at photographing the moon on this forum, i thought i would post my own effort and see what you guys think.

Image
Canon 350D, 4 photo mosaic, 1/20s @ ISO200.
if my maths is correct, a focal length of 1200mm (35mm equiv. = 1920mm)
oh and manual focus :D

hehe, the secrets of the trade, my 'lens' is actually a telescope, with a 350D attached at prime focus, the scope is a sky-watcher ED80, focal length of 600mm. i also used a 2x barlow, which gives a focal length of 1200mm, combined with the crop factor, a focal length of 1920mm. very nice. not bad for an extremely sharp piece of glass, with fantastic contrast and saturation. i'll post some of my bird photos taken through it later on. fantastic quality for a 'lens' that only cost around $600 new. :D

as for the mosaic, it's like a panorama, so that photo is a composite of 4 images. one photo for each quarter of that image. the final image that i've got done up is printable at 12"x18" @ 300ppi.

Good God! We all look at expanding our lens base and now we have to look at telescopes too   BTW an excellent image

mmmmm, telescopes. are fantastic, the only downside with them is the manual focus. but bang for buck, telescopes are fantastic.

amazing quality. :D

yeah i'd like to know more about this aswell. does it come with a mount adaptor, where to buy/ look at some etc.

this depends on the quality fo scope, and whatnot you are buying, but generally, no, they do not come with a mount adapter. for my ed80 telescope, i need three things to connect my camera to it. i need the EOS-to-t-thread adapter, then a t-thread to 2" adapter, then a 2" extension tube. the t thread is a universal adapter used widely on telescopes and spotting scopes. the extension adapter is to bring the focus plane closer to the telescope.

with telescope there are two types of scope, the refractor and the reflector. your standard camera lens is a refractor, where light is refracted and concentrated through a series of glass elements. a reflector on the other hand uses a mirror system to reflect through the tube and onto the camera. reflectors are generally cheaper to buy, but need alot more maintaining (cleaning mirrors, aligning mirrors, etc.) to produce the good images.

if you interested, i would suggest that you have a look around http://www.iceinspace.com.au, which is an australian based astronomy site that i'm also a part of. the forums there are great and the community is quite helpful.

but enough of a plug for my other hobby...

thanks for the comments guys!

Nicely put together Josh. Very clear for the exposure length.
I have an 8" reflector but have yet to contemplate hooking up the camera.
That will be a one day project at present.
