I've been experimenting in Lightroom to create some standard black and white conversion presets. These three images are the output using the first preset I'm happy with - I've called it "B & W - Dramatic". The idea is to create a slightly surreal and ominous result. The image chosen has to match of course. In the images here it was the clouds that I wanted to bring out.

I'd say neither, and call it craft!

The outcome reminds me of a certain decorative style of landscape drawing, or almost a cross-over between drawing and engraving, and works very well for the subject matter. It'd be interesting to see what happens if you apply the technique to other subjects, but as presented here I approve!

Stubbsy, the action reminds me of the high contrast B&W one would see from the turn of the century. Suits this subject matter well.

Peter I am a big fan of B&W, and I like these. I am not sure though if you have succeded in your aims as ominous is not a word I would have chosen to describe these images. The skies do not dominate and in fact if I had to choose a single word it would be balanced.

While I am not a big fan of black and white, I agree with Glen that they look very much like the plate based photos from the beginning of the 20th century, and for that reason there is a certain amount of appeal, even to me.

Thanks for the feedback gentlemen. That old fashioned look was what I had in the back of my mind so I guess I'm done with that preset.
