That's true, unless you have a player like Trombone Shorty up front. I've yet to meet him, but I'm working on that. I did mange to get a few minutes with Allen Toussaint yesterday.
But back on topic ...This guy is young - about 23, I believe. The band he has around him are all very accomplished musicians, as you might note if you pay close attention to these images. Check the last of these closely.
Troy Andrews (to give him his real name) has been playing here for years. I'm sure that I may have seen him maybe ten or more years ago, busking around Jackson Square. He knows how to work the audience - of which there were several thousand - but more importantly, he knows music. Jazz, blues, funk ... I was hearing some Sly And The Family Stone influences in his opening number, and later in the set, there was more Family Stone in evidence (ya ya ya ya ya.... ya).
While I have no photographic privileges here - I do have recording privileges, but that specifically excludes the recording of performances - photography is permitted, and within the tents there is some reasonable access. Places like the Congo Stage, which is where Trombone Shorty was playing - provide no good access, and the large crowd didn't help.
For those who may be interested in this sort of thing, Nikons and Canons seem to be here in roughly equal numbers. I have noticed one lady - with photography creds - using a low end Canon with kit glass - and I am seeing a few 70-200 f/2.8 IS lenses.
