NOJF - The Pianist and the Torch Singer.

Well, I'm not exactly sure that I'd call Bobby McFerrin a torch singer, but just look at him.

Image

Yes, that's Chic Corea on the keys. This was in the Jazz Tent, and it was well beyond standing room only. The Police - New Orleans PD, not Sting's outfit - needed to be called in order to clear a couple of the aisles so that public safety was ensured. I was sitting maybe 100 yards back, couldn't stand up (got to consider the other punters) to get better images. D300 with the venerable 70-210 sitting on the front.

As you can see, the boys were not enjoying themselves at all.

Image

It was hot - very hot - and crowded to the point of uncomfortable. But the music, too, was hot, and that was what this was all about.

McFerrin singing, Corea playing, and everyone having a ball. forget "Don't Worry, Be Happy". That is not what McFerrin does. He is a much better performer than that would suggest. And apart from his usual scat, he also performed a couple of standards, in a more normal fashion.

Although with Bobby, one might wonder just what equates to "normal"

All done!

I'm sure that Gary will correct me if I'm wrong... but my understanding of a torch singer is one that sings about lost love.. :)

No; that would then have to include the dog and the truck.

I love Chic <very jealous> esp his Elektric band stuff.
His chart Spain is an all time favorite.

Did he do any solo work (not a fan of Bobby)?
Cheers, Bruce

No.

This was Chic and Bobby. A reprise of something Chic did in NYC a year os ago, when he spent a couple of weeks in a nightclub, but performing with different people each night. McFerrin was one of those, and results were spectacular.

See if you can find yourself a copy of Blue Monk from that set. It'll make you sit up and take notice. They did that on Saturday, with McFerrin jumping off the stage and playing the crowd, and inviting individuals to scat with him for 12. They did, and it was the highlight of their set.
