Crater Falls - Cradle Mountain Nat Park

It's taken me a while to get my Cradle Mountain trip shots processed but here is the first one of many. Life sort of set aside my PP time but got a bit of time this afternoon. This was taken over the Anzac long-weekend. As you would expect in that wonderful part of the world, there was a fair bit of rain so the water was a bit more brown then usual. There are multiple levels to these falls and this is just a little section of them.

Nikon D200, Tokina 12-24 at 19mm f/16, 15 sec, tripod, a slight crop.

The water looks lovely.. as does the mossy rocks in the backgrounds.. I feel that the composition with the large rock in the foreground is letting it down slightly though..

I agree, the rock is a bit too prominent. Try covering the bottom with your hand to create a pano, I think it improves it.

I tend to think as a whole it is missing a little something..

There are really two strong elements- as another option I think it may be two pics in one. A vertical line to right of the waterfall making it as if in portait orientation with a bottom crop at the gathered twigs on left, and then a squarish crop of the eddy and its background. Just a thought.

That mossy bank and tannin creek is my goal to get a good image from someday. Is crater falls a day trip from the car park or a few days in?

Agree with the others, however you could clone that rock out I reckon...especially if you have other shots with water flowing towards you, one could replace the rock.....

I actually like the rock Andre, makes it a little different. I've walked thru CMNP numerous times, but not for over 20 years. I need to get back there.

Thanks for the comments, much appreciated. I've got a few variations, so I'll try a different combos.

Robert, Crater Falls are a comfortable 20 minutes walk from the Ronny Creek car park or about 30-40 minutes from the Dove Lake carpark, so quite easy to get to.

I like it.

The water is normally very brown from the tannins up there, I wouldn't say your shot is more brown than the norm.

Agree regarding the rock's prominence.

Andre, did you take any others at faster shutter speeds? I've had good results with the whirlpooling foam at a few seconds (depends on the speed of the whirlpool - I try to make the rotating bubbles into discontinuous 'streaks') long exposures blur the water and foam into continuous mist - still looks ok, but I think people find the effect of shorter exposures more engaging.
