Night Shots - Long Exposure

I went out on Friday night with a mate to try some long exposures and to test my new Sigma 10-20mm, thx Gary & Poon.

It's very hard to focus @ 9pm via moonlight and a torch. I also didn't know that when you use the noise reduction feature in the camera it takes as long to write the image to the card as it did to take the shot. So each image was taking about 16 minutes to complete. It was fun reading the manual by torch light to realise what my camera was trying to do.

These are from Turrimetta beach on Sydney's Northern Beaches.

We then drove to the Bahi Temple. After spending an hour around the temple ( including one of the patrons unlocking the door to let us inside ) we decided to call it a night.

This was taken on the way back to the car when they had turned off the main light ( around 11pm ) at the front of the temple. You can see the side lights remained on giving a nice glow to the building without being over powering. This was a 3 shot HDR. -2, 0 , +2 blended with TuFuse and then CS3.

Hey Wocka,
These are good shots..I particularly like images one and 4, the Bahi temple looks great, and the way that the clouds are travelling add to the shot. Soon you'll be demonstrating HDR at future minimeets etc :)

I think the people at the Bahi temple could well be interested in that shot! Curiously, at full resolution how big did the file end up being?

I think I'd like to see a tad more contrast in the first one. Having said that I'm only viewing it on my work LCD.

Thanks for sharing.

I too like the last one. I started taking night shots in the mid-seventies when the quickest film emulsion was 160ASA tungsten that gave you a horrible red cast. When you added reciprocity failure in long images you would be going through a lot of film only to totally start again once these visual migraines had done your head in. Man I love digital - if it ain't right then just double the exposure.
