It's been really foggy and misty in Vancouver. I've driven by this field before and thought that I'd like to have a go at it. With the mist I've been chomping at the bit to get at it. This one worked out just the way I wanted it. I spot metered right beside the lights as I wanted to black out pretty much everything else. Gives the light an almost palpable quality.



I'd love to hear your thoughts/suggestions.

Edited to make it bigger. Yes I was surprised at how small it came up on here. Might be the Web host, they had changed their format a little.

While I can see what you've tried to achieve I can't really comment since for me it lacks detail. I think this is really only because I'm looking at such a tiny rendition of the shot. Maybe you could post a link to a larger version.

It has a 'close encounters of the third kind' feel to it.

Yes, the light does have a physical quality to it.

But for this pis to work better (IMHO) dooda, you need to reduce the amount of 'dead space' in the frame. It looks like two-thirds of the image is just black, and while you obviously need some of this to make the pic work, it just seems too much to me as presented.

Did you look at any crops to see if they enhanced the image at all?

However, this is not a normal, run-of the-mill photo, and full marks for experimentation.

Yep I have a couple of others that I'll look at that were cropped in closer. I've been on a real "dead space" kick lately. Actually I like to call it silence, but it is what it is and here maybe I over did it a tad (I already thought I was doing well zooming in). Thanks a lot for the advice (though for now I think that this version works for me.)

I have seen this type of shot before, in Sports Illustrated no less!!! so you are on the right track.

What made the SI shot so spectacular was the detail the photographer was able to achieve in the subjects (Baseball) while still getting the effect from the lights (not sure if there was fog though).

I think you should head back to the filed and try getting in a little closer and try different settings.

Great idea though.
