Was a little bored this afternoon so went to the park behind our house. Here is a couple of shots taken with the D80 and the 18-135mm kit lens. Still really new to photography so any tips, comments or critiques will be greatly appreciated. Cheers





Also i've heard that the 18-135mm lens is junk and that i should invest in a better lens as soon as i can. My noob question is just how much of a difference would a better lens make in terms of image quality and should i really get rid of the 18-135 as quickly as every1 said i should?

I really like the tree trunk, a nice image.

Can't really advise specifically on the 18-135. But I think you might as well hang on to it until you outgrow it.

If you do have money and you want to buy another lens - then I'm sure there are people here that can recommend some nice ones!

I like the second picture too. The first lacks a point of interest.

I think that a better lens makes a difference to picture quality, although some people make great pictures with not so great lenses. Learn to use what you have well and then think about upgrading, unless you have money to spend. Eventually you will find that you want new lenses as you understand more about what you are doing (at least, that's what happened for me!). Also you will know what focal length(s) you use most and what type of photography you enjoy.

Thanks for the comments guys, really appreciate it. Contrary to what i mentioned i actually have to current plans to upgrade to a lens in the near future. Pretty happy with the current one and is saving up for the 50mm f1.8. I was just really curious about it as i've been advised by 3 people in real life that the kit lens is "junk" and i should jus upgrade asap.

Love the "feel" of the second one. The depth of the trees in the background only adds to the sense that I want to reach out and touch the bark.

I can't offer any junk-or-not opinions on the lens (I'm a Canon user...!), but yours is a great range to have. I bought an 18-200 because it's so versatile; nice and wide, and nice and long.

Learn your camera and lens first, and how it affects your technique. You already have a $500 lens: Get out and take pictures!
