(This post has been ghostwritten for me by my Dad, paulmac.)
Hi there. My name is Sarah, I'm 12, and I'm seeing less and less of my Dad, because he always has his new camera in front of his face...

I like taking pictures too, so I thought I'd join in.

I took two of these pictures with Dad's new Canon dslr, and I took the other two with his other little Kodak camera. I hope that doesn't matter too much.
I promise I took these pictures myself. Dad just helped me look at things from another viewpoint.

Theme 1: ... Wet
Fresh from the water. He would not sit still for two seconds... Dad is trying to teach me about something he calls depth of field, but I haven't quite got it yet.

Theme 2: ... Plane

Theme 3: ... Mineral
We saw all of these crows sitting on these "minerals", and they took off just as I took the picture.
Image

Theme 4: ... Five
Dad's car (he wishes!)
Look closely and you can see me...

We had a great time taking pictures this weekend. Thanks again, and perhaps I can join in under my own username next time.

Sarah, welcome to the forum with some wonderful first pics. I’m sure your dad gave you some advice but it’s your eye at the viewfinder and your finger on the trigger and you have talent that will grow in leaps and bounds :D

:agree:

Welcome Sarah. Great Series. I think your portrait would qualify as "five" too. but I'm not convinced you took that one :D

I particularly like your "mineral" shot

See you next month, or maybe sooner, under your own name (and maybe your own camera... Hint Dad :!: )

I like the shot of the plane. Kind of big and ominous staring back down at us.

What type of dog is that? Looks a lot like my 2+ year old cocker x poodle...?

Dad is trying to teach me about something he calls depth of field, but I haven't quite got it yet.

Depth of field is really easy.

Mostly you want the things you want people to look at to be in focus (sharp), and all the other clutter to be out of focus (blurry)

The way lenses work, the smaller the hole in the middle the more things will be in focus, the larger the hole fewer things will be in focus.

How much is in focus is called "Depth Of Field"

What you need to decide is: Do you want nearly everything to be in focus, or just one thing. If you want lots to be in focus - large depth of field, make a little hole (a large aperture number). If you want to limit what is in focus, - small depth of field, you need a big hole (small number)
Most cameras these days show the view with the lens wide open (large hole). The better ones have a button you can press somewhere that lets you see what the sensor will see when the shutter is pressed, but on a digital it is usually just as esy to take a photom, look at it, then take another photo if necessary for the look you want.. This is called a "Depth of Field preview" button.

The tricky bit is to remember to think about this before you press the shutter button.

Have a look at Big Red's "five" photo for a good use of controlling what is in focus to create an interesting photo from an otherwise uninteresting subject.
