Forum rules
Please note that image critiquing is a matter of give and take: if you post images for critique, and you then expect to receive criticism, then it is also reasonable, fair and appropriate that, in return, you post your critique of the images of other members here as a matter of courtesy. So please do offer your critique of the images of others; your opinion is important, and will help everyone here enjoy their visit to far greater extent.

Also please note that, unless you state something to the contrary, other members might attempt to repost your image with their own post processing applied. We see this as an acceptable form of critique, but should you prefer that others not modify your work, this is perfectly ok, and you should state this, either within your post, or within your signature.

Images posted here should conform with the general forum guidelines. Image sizes should not exceed 950 pixels along the largest side (height or width) and typically no more than four images per post or thread.

The Leaf

I was up early today, doing some GPS trailwalking to improve the openstreetmap data in the local walking areas. Weather was threatening rain, and misty in parts, we had rain overnight. (Adelaide Hills) Anyway, my little walk of 13.5 or so kms took me onto the ETSA Spur track near Cleland Wildlife Park, which is where this image was taken. Funny thing is, as I walked down the track, I never noticed the moisture on the leaves and grasses around. It was only after turning around at the end and heading back up the track that the light caught the water droplets. Sadly, only had a Lumix P&S with me today.

The lumix did a great job!!

:ot: But is this your job? Walking trails with GPS to improve the maps?

Oh, how I wish :)

If you check this map link and then again next thursday, you'll see the result.

Most of what you see there now was done by another mapper and myself.

Great shot, although I find the black bit at the bottom left a little bit distracting.

Hmm. I can move it around a bit, but other undesirable stuff gets into frame:

or zoom in to lose the peripheral background:

What do you think?

I would personally go with the zoom.
It concentrates more on fantastic silver spheres, and less on the sand.
I find myself seeing much more detail in the leaf.

Much better, and a really great shot.

Thanks for the comments..

This is one situation where the extreme depth of field of the small sensor in the P&S works to your advantage.

If you're interested in the results of my GPS trailwalking, here is the map as it stands today. There are not many trails in the immediate area left to track and enter, but a month or so ago, there were only the major roads in this area on the map.. (The photo was taken approximately at the red dot):

What do you mean "approximately"?
You did all that, and you didn't have GPS locations embedded in your EXIF? :D

haha.

Well, no. I didn't. I've been on that track about 10 times, I can probably take you to the exact point more accurately than the GPS. But then again, the leaf will have blown away by now, so no-one will ever know the comparative accuracy of photohiker vs GPS.

FWIW, the GPS accuracy is usually within 5-7m. So even a GPS location is approximate if you're looking for a leaf.
