Gold Star

Hi

I was not sure where to present these as they are not really for crituque, so if the mods want to move the thread, please do.

These are some scans of very poor condition photos taken in the early to mid 1930's. I have attempted to make some repairs in PS as there were many scrtatches, folds and drawing pin holes!

The gent sitting on the bike, a 499cc Rudge and a 498cc Excelsior JAP, is my grandfather, Walter Marshall who raced motorcycles at the Brooklands racetrack in Weybridge, Surrey, in the UK.

In 1931 he was awarded a 'Gold Star' lapel badge for acheiving 100mph around the banked circuit. The Gold Star in the photo is the actual one awarded to him and at the pub celebrating the success, the badge fell from his lapel and was accidentally trodden on, hence the removal of the enamel surface.

The first and second pictures were taken at Brooklands circuit and he third was taken in the High Street of the town where I was born, Epping. In fact, next to the tower in the background is a row of terrace houses... I was born in one of those very houses.

Unfortunately I have no idea on what type of camera the photos were taken on other than it definetly was not digital!

Awesome story and photos! You could do some restoration on these... These might even be rangefinder photos...

Nice story and pics. I love looking at old images. In fact, there were a few threads with old pictures a while ago - I thought there was a sub-forum for it (might be called "memories" or something like that).
