Shot this this morning just after I did some shots of the sunrise. The sky was on fire as I left home but by the time I got my location it was all over. Caught the sun just peaking over the horizon but all the great colour had gone from the sky. This was a spur of the moment photo opp as I was making coffee looking out the window at the sky...... and then just bolted for the car. On the way out the door I grabbed the tripod, D300 18-70 zoom, and the 24 mm PC lens, hoping for a pano of the ocean and sky....... missed the sky and ocean opp, so here is a 3 exposure only pano I did as a quick test, could have used a grad or polarizer here...... I will reprocess later using Capture NX and see If I can get more out of the sky

might have to reshoot this image to get more life into the pix........ to create more interest......

Next time maybe you can try achieve a darker sky with a half grad filter?

i still reckon it's pretty good for an impromtu shot

i know this is going to sound silly.. to make a panorama shot, can i use any tripod and head (eg. 804RC2) or must i use one specifically designed for pano work? Surely a simple 3 way head is sufficient.. the rest im guessing is done in some sort of software, right?

You can use any type of tripod and head. I've done one handheld before. Granted not really ideal but it can work. You need to manually set your exposure so that it doesn't differ across the shots that you take otherwise you'll get different colour shades for the same thing as you pan across. I use Canon Photostitch but I'm sure there are other software programs that do the same thing. You can adjust the individual photos when they are stitched together to make everthing line up before you save.

yes you can, as long as the images overlap by a third or more for best results....... I find using a longer lens, say a 50mm lens, when you start out, you have a better keeper rate but it will come back to software. the above image was stiched using PSCS3 photomerg. I have done panos hand holding, very easy to do..........

the above image the lens moved not the camera...... this shot was done is seconds, focus & set lens to f16, moved the lens all the way to the left, then the middle, and all the way to the right, used photomerge in PSCS3...... 3 exposures only

Although you might able to PS it so that the sky has more life or process to BW
