Simple portraits

Well with no weddings during the winter season I decided to get back to basics and shoot a few simple portraits with a friend. I decided to leave my lighting equipment and all that entails and leave the posing natural and uncomplicated. Man the simple things in life are often the best ;)

Enjoy!

i would have liked to see a bit more light on her face in the first one. turning into the light may have brought a more balanced lighting result imo.

#2 and #3 are very special. absolutely beautiful shots.

Some nice shot there. I particularly like the lighting setup in no. 1. Well executed.

Very nice all of them. I like each one for different reasons and I think you should feel proud of them.

I like #1 best, because it has a lot of athmosphere and it's not so "lifestylish".

Why did you choose to have the lips sharp but the eyes soft in #3?

Cheers,
Peter

Well done on some great pics. My Favourite has to go to number 2 and then 4 with pic 1 taking up the minor placings.

Rainy days and a little imagination can still give great results. Nice work.

Cheers

Thanks everyone for the kind comments. To answer the questions:

Catcha: The first and last pic was with a 70-200 2.8 IS while #2 and #3 was with the 24-70

Barry: I know you didn't ask a question but just wanna clarify the 'lighting setup' I really had no special lights to play with. All I had to use was the dimmer lights on the ceiling and a lamp with a flexible neck from the left.

Peter: While I was framing close to her face, I noticed that she had really gorgeous lips, so I decide to focus on that instead.

Nice work Ronald. I just had a look at your smugmug site and you do nice stuff. You don't always have to have all the bells and whistles to create great shots.

With the photo of the mouth in focus, maybe if you lowered the watermark to the mouth it would draw attention away from the out of focus eye.
But hey, what would i know, right?

Thanks for the comment RDW. Your right and this is what the session was all about. Make do with just the basics and see what I'll get. Obviously these were process to make them look how I want them to look but getting an excellent exposure is the 1st step into creating a beautiful image.

Mate, I take into account peoples feedback regardless of their skill levels in photography. Don't feel discourage. By all mean comment and critique my work as sometimes, we as photographers get too close to our projects that we may miss certain details or think of ideas that may have made a good photo into a great one. Trust me I've had times that people with no eye for photography would say something that makes me say "Geez, your right. Why didn't I think of that?"

Excellent photos, Ron.

No. 2 is my favourite. Beautiful use of DoF, well composed and B&w really works here. The model looks really at east and her expression is very natural.
No. 1 I really like the pose and looks like you've achieve a great result with ambient light.

The last one is a great lifestyle shot. Nice bright colours and naturally looking portrait. The only critique I have is the out-of-focus section of the couch in the foreground is a tad destractive, but that's a matter of taste.

Well done.
