I went shooting at the park today expecting the trees, grounds and the ducks. Well... no ducks. Instead several squirrels.

I almost got this little guy but had a little trouble with the focus. It's better on the body than the face. I'll have to read my manual some more and do more experimenting.

70-210mm at full tilt. f5.6, 1/500th handheld.

Still a very nice shot Steve. We do not have squirrels in Australia but I do remember them with affection in the UK.

Wonderful shot.

At any extreme of a zoom, you are going to get a loss in sharpness, and some light fall off at the edges, more so the cheaper the lense. The 70-210 is a great little lense, and i think the problem here if i may is the Aperature of F 5.6 a little to shallow a depth of field to get the whole subject sharp, perhaps 1/250th @ F8 or 1/125th @ F11 would have done the same exposure with more depth of field.

Congrats though, very nice.

Ahhh... I actually miss squirrels.

They're cute little buggers.

Great shot. The contrast between the tree on the left and the soft area to the right really make it for me.. They're both soo warm and rich.

Don't beat yourself up over the focus. I usually get all the technical parts right (focus, exposure, etc.) and my shots still stink because I'm no good at the composure. The composure here is perfect. Way to go.

You'll perfect the technical parts, but I'll likely never suddenly 'be' artistic :)

Steve

I think this is a great shot. Nice warm colours, good composition and the slight softness doesn't really distract.

Fantastic photo!

*twitches nervously*

My only take on squirrels was when i was in england for 2 years, they would jump out of the trees and literally attack unsuspecting victims walking underneath...

I can see the winning photo now, birds-eye view of a squirrel freefalling, teeth bared towards an unsuspecting passer-by...

... thanks to 3 mins and MS paint. :P

Great shot, Steve. My only nit would be the twig between the squirrel, which you would have had no control over.
