If you think that modern travel is quite unpleasant
with small seats, passport control and customs
spare a thought for those who had to travel around
the world in the 18th century.
I visited the replica of Captain Cook's Endeavour
yesterday and you can't help but be amazed of what
these people accomplished then.

It might be surprising to you, but no matter how big Navy ships get in this 'modern' era, there is still bugger-all space in them the keep stuff I want to take like my ALL my camera equipment, uniforms, books, laptop, civvies, mp3 player, DVDs, souvenirs, shoe polish , etc etc etc........ It's really hard to imagine how much space those guys had for personal effects. But they did have hammocks, lots of alcohol and Chlamydia.

You said it! Apparently Sir Joseph Banks was 6ft + tall so he had to sleep in the officers' mesh because he did not fit in his own cabin. The position of the toilet was interesting for it was located at the front of the ship. I also learned that " there is no room to swing a cat" referred to there was not room on the lower deck to give the lash so it had to be done on the top deck; while "don't let the cat out of the bag" meant to keep the lash (cat of nine tails) secure in the bag, other wise it had to be used on somebody's back. And all the time I thought it had to do with the four-legged animal!
