Looks great, but maybe I would have preferred to see the whole beastie accompanied by a close-up / crop of the head...
What is it? What lens etc.?

Hi Leek,
the insect is a praying mantis.
It was about 14 cm long.
I used a 70-200mm Nikon VR at 200mm, SB800 flash
with 1/500s and f11.
The shot was on an angle and quite tricky for that.
There wasn't much "substance, real estate" to enlarge the head and I stayed away from posting a complete photo of the insect.
I felt that a complete photo would have minimised the detail.
On the other hand if I had had a macro lens, the head of the insect could have potentially been superb.

Yep... that head is definitely a magical shot - maybe even a crop would do??? It seems to be looking at you quizzically ... and... What do you want from me?

The insect is 14cm long and you have to use the 70-200VR, about 100 times of the insect to capture it
How do you feel?

I feel fine, thank you.
The fact that I didn't consider the kit lens or the 50mm 1.8 may be related to me having had the the Sigma APO 70-300 macro previously.
I may not fully understand what my lenses can do.
But you know what ? You can stay at quite a distance with the 70-200.
I've had a praying mantis fly at me before and I didn't like the experience.
Having said this, I'm open to suggestions.
