First REAL gig with the d700Well I shot birds of tokyo on sunday night, had an absolute ball and all i can say is thank god for the D700. Usually when shooting with my old D200 i would try not to take it over 800, and i would be VERY hesitant to shoot at 1600.
On sunday night i was getting exposures around 1/50th(at best) f2.8 iso 5000 in the centre of the stage on the lead singer. There was another 'tog there using a 40d shooting at 1600 and having to underexpose by 2 stops and shoot in a rim light fashion, lets just say his shots werent too good. So enough blabbering and here are some shots! Re: First REAL gig with the d700
absolutely.. the resolution is excellent
Re: First REAL gig with the d700Very impressive photos. Now could you tell me, as I understand the D700 is a full frame camera and you had a D200. Can you use the same lenses in both cameras? I thought you couldn't. I have a Canon, but a friend of mine has a D200 and I was talking to him about what I read here on the D700.
Re: First REAL gig with the d700Amazing - great photos. You must have a good camera aye?
Great eye on the cables too. Zafra - depends on the lenses. If your friend has DX lenses (like Nikkor 18-200VR, 18-70, Sigma 10-20 are a few examples), they won't work at full resolution (but there is a DX mode). If they are full frame lenses - no worries. As an example, if I was to change because of Thommo - I could use my 28-70, 80-200, 80-400, 50 but would realistically have to sell the 10-20 and 18-200 that I have. Old D200+extras
Re: First REAL gig with the d700
i couldnt use my sigma 10-20 or my 10.5mm fisheye, which is why i have now sold them both to fund a 16mm fisheye! http://flickr.com/photos/jamesthomsonphotography/

Re: First REAL gig with the d700
Do you mean they wouldn't work at all or just that you didn't want to use them as the camera would crop to DX mode?
Re: First REAL gig with the d700
There's always DX crop mode! Nikon does not lock you out physically, like EF vs EF-S lenses, but in general you would avoid using DX lenses on a FX or film body (D3 or D700) due to the vignetting, but the FX bodies have a DX crop mode which will let it act like a crop sensor camera (a bit of a waste though). If i was to got to the D700 at this point in time I only have to ditch my Tamron 17-50m f/2.8 and can keep my AF-S 24-70 f/2.8, AF-D 50 f/1.8, Tamron 70-300 (will be replaced eventually by some fast glass), Sigma 180mm f/3.5 and even my rarely used Tamron 28-105 f/2.8 and AF-D 28-80 will remain useful. BTW Thommo when are you getting that 16mm I cant wait to hear what you have to say about it, can you test it on a DX body for me? I may be adding it to my list of lenses to chase since i didnt buy your 10.5 (no money!!!) Cameron
