Playing with matches

Got a thin skin? Then look elsewhere. Post a link to an image that you've made, and invite others to offer their critiques. Honesty is encouraged, but please be positive in your constructive criticism. Flaming and just plain nastiness will not be tolerated. Please note that this is not an area for you to showcase your images, nor is this a place for you to show-off where you have been. This is an area for you to post images so that you may share with us a technique that you have mastered, or are trying to master. Typically, no more than about four images should be posted in any one post or thread, and the maximum size of any side of any image should not exceed 950 px.

Please note that image critiquing is a matter of give and take: if you post images for critique, and you then expect to receive criticism, then it is also reasonable, fair and appropriate that, in return, you post your critique of the images of other members here as a matter of courtesy. So please do offer your critique of the images of others; your opinion is important, and will help everyone here enjoy their visit to far greater extent.

Also please note that, unless you state something to the contrary, other members might attempt to repost your image with their own post processing applied. We see this as an acceptable form of critique, but should you prefer that others not modify your work, this is perfectly ok, and you should state this, either within your post, or within your signature.

Images posted here should conform with the general forum guidelines. Image sizes should not exceed 950 pixels along the largest side (height or width) and typically no more than four images per post or thread.

Please also ensure that you have a meaningful location included in your profile. Please refer to the FAQ for details of what "meaningful" is.

I think I want a macro lens... and a simple way of lighting a match without touching it...

The second is interesting.. almost mesmerising actually the way the flame curls like that..

hint.. try a gas bbq lighter - and someone else to light the match for you.. :)
The last thing I want to do is hurt you... but it's still on the list... ;)

If it wasnt for some stupid misuse I'd suggest a laser- need to be around 20mw. I think customs is now confiscating all lasers over 5mw.

Hmm maybe i should give this a go, I have my macro now as well.

Pre focus on match, light with a candle/bbq lighter/another match and then snap at 8fps sound like it will work???

I'll give it a go soon, maybe early next week

if you hold the match on an angle, and hold another lit match below the head of the angled match, the heat will gradually light it. you will be able watch it light (and see the magnesium burn) :)

It takes some patience, but the results can be great. I have seen alot better photos than those 2 on Flickr.

As it happens the flame top right is in fact another burning match that I used to light the main one, didn't get out of the way in time but it still looks OK.

That would be a great way actually, but probably best I don't get thrown in with the idiots who like to point them at aircraft cockpits trying to sneak one through!

That's what I did, though at 6fps, but looks like brentsky and norbs have the idea to me! I have an idea for getting it lit without touching it, if it works out I'll post some examples.

Still want a macro though. The Tammy is such a bargain and I've been thinking about it for ages... shame I'm skint this month!
