Kipper, you right - looks better with black background...I'll be doing that before I print it.
It's just shot with the kit lens and as SoCal Steve says, rather spend time with your current kit and learn how to use it. I would love a proper macro lens and that's prob. the next thing I'll buy. I used to have a Sony DSC S75 and a polarizing filter and that was it. Used that for 3 years. Now I've upgraded to this stunning Nikon Camera and enjoy every shot with it.
