Two images I'm really undecided about. The first is a cracker shot, but it bothers me the insect is out of focus. And a big thank you to Geoff for not only spotting this critter, but lending me his lens to take the shot. The second - well you tell me.

Peter,
I think the first one is good even without the fly. If you hadn't mentioned the fly, it is hard to actually see it, focused or not. The only thing I would do is crop a bit off the bottom.
As for the self-portrait, I like it. In the larger version, it is even better. The colours really suit and having your outline in the window adds to the composition. Due to the hat you are wearing, this could be from a lot of different eras. Give it a sepia treatment to have that early 1900's feel to it.
cheers,
André

I think the second shot is a great approach to a self-portrait. Colours are great.

First one is
Eulamprus quoyii - the eastern water skink, and quite a nice shot too - they can be a bit skitty... I don't mind the OOF insect - kind of adds to the photo in my mind
I'm undecided on the second ... still thinking about it, but it is an interesting concept

I absolutely love the first photo! The big black eye is what catches my eye and keeps drawing me back to it, so I don't think that the out-of-focus insect is much of a problem at all.

Peter,
The skink is great and shows a lot of detail. The only thing I don't like is the background, a) because it is unnatural and b) because it is distracting, although, the opportunity would not have let you do much else.

He came in the night, he was talked about but never seen, and the only reason people knew about him was because he left his mark - The Shadow of Reflection Man. Love it Peter

I like #1 Peter. Very crisp with eye contact to boot.

Number 1! Number 2 is a bit obscure to be called a self-portrait. "The Shadow is Watching" or "Reflecting on my window" would be more appropriate, I think, But, seriously the colours and sharpness are good and it is a good abstract.
