I've been experimneting with black and white lately. I took this shot of a Leopard walking towards the camera at Adelaide Zoo back in March 2007. Originally you could see the orange walls in the background which gave away the zoo location and there were too many colours going on as well. Switching to black and white plus some channel mixing and I now think it works ok:

Image

1d2, 300mm@2.8, 1/2000sec, ISO 400

I used two raw conversions, one to to control the highlights, plus lightened the eyes a little and used a high pass and USM sharpen.

EDIT; Thought i'd inlcude one more black and white conversion, also Adelaide Zoo In March 07:

All c&C appreciated :)

Great eye contact. I like to see the left side (of the photo) lightened a bit, particularly around the eye. Just imho.

The first image fails to work for me...probably because of the broken light and the cats pose. The second image is masterful and a wonderful animal portrait. Nice work!

Tim - both photos are great - I actually like the first one with the dappled light - gives the shot more of a feel of the animal coming up through the undergrowth - but jmho :) Fantastic conversions too - well done :)
