Learn To Dance !!

This place is in Riversdale Road, and I pass it every morning on the tram. I have photographed it
a couple of times, thinking it could potentially be a great shot, but it hasn't happened for me.

I love the slightly tired look of the place, I love the musical staff on the front there where a note has
clearly fallen off, the whole thing is just a bit sad and daggy.

I have given up trying to get a good shot, I am not happy with this one, but I am sick
of trying to turn a sow's ear into a silk purse. So this is it then.

Hi Greg,

Reshoot this from just below the patio overhang ... a little below where the sign says dance studio.

Oh yes, ... ask a couple to get dressed up to the nines, and have them strike a dance pose on the roof, just to the right of the chimney.

:)

and while you're at it ask them to put a dot in the second bar. :)

Geoff I can see why this attracted you, and I wonder if a B&W conversion might suit the image better?

Greg, I must say I am a fan of this shot, I love the tired look and unusual skies, the whole feeling is one of a bygone era

What Glen said. By the way...I got my guitar out and played the music. It just happens to be the Gregorian chant in B.....Greg B...get it? Spooky! More mystery in the universe than carbon dioxide! :D :D :D :D :D :D

If anybody cares, this is the original shot.

Gary, I am done with this sucker

Phillip, a dot would fix the second bar, absolutely

Thanks Oneputt, even if you got my name wrong

Thanks Glen

Thanks Matt, although it is in B flat, so I must be Greg B Flat :D

You both must be getting old and crotchety.

If not dotty, because not a dot, but a crotchet, is what's needed. :)

Not necessarily Gary, a dot next to what is already there will also do it. won't it?

Greg i also like what you have done with the shot

would shooting it in late afternoon or evening light assist in getting a different effect ?

Cheers

Actually, no, it wouldn't.

It would certainly fill the bar with the missing beat, but a dotted note really just extends the prior note, and perhaps - probably - with an implied slur. In the other bars, we see that there are no such slurs, and we also see that there is always a third (hard) beat in every bar. While a dotted note doesn't exclude that, it also doesn't instruct the player that this is what is needed.

Importantly - the notes that follow are almost always of a different note value - Bb-G, G-Eb ... While the final bar seems to be Bb - Bb, that too does not use a dotted note, even though (being the final bar) resolving to a dotted note may well be musically correct at that point.

But a dotted note doesn't permit the use of a different note value to occur, and for me, that would be overriding consideration.

... and besides all that, it wouldn't be the Blue Danube any more would it? :)
