Took this last weekend during a brief break in the rain. Hopefully my ID is correct, but I'm open to correction. I would have preferred a front view, but the background was not as nice.

Hi Kevin,

That's a nice image of a native orchid. I assume this spider orchid is fairly small like most of the orchids of Tasmania, so it's especially good to get a good shot without using a macro lens. Does SA have many species of native orchid?

Cheers
John

Thanks John,

It's about 50mm across I guess, don't know how that compares? The Sigma lens goes down to 1:3.5, and for this I was at min focusing distance.

I think you have done alright with your ID of this one.
It is a member of a complex group of species that only have minor differences between most of them.
Nice pic by the way.
Regards Colin

Kevin - I really like this shot - I think the unconventional angle that it is taken from adds even more to the shot - well seen and well taken :)

Thanks all. Your comments have inspired me to go out again this weekend, this time with the right gear. The shot above was taken during a portrait session, so I wasn't really set up for it, and the client seemed to think the camera should be pointed her way more often.
