HDR Machines

I've been inspired by some of the quality HDR images I've seen here lately to try my hand at it. Rather than landscape shots I've experimented with some old images that I'd taken at Cockatoo Island last year using either bracketing or different exposures.

The images below are my first 3 attempts at the process. In future I'll be taking images with this process in mind so I'll hopefully refine this. All are multi image HDRs tone mapped using Photomatix. After that they have had some minor tweaking in Lightroom.

Tell me what you think.

I like the subject matter and I think that HDR suits it admirably.

Great shots Peter :D

I particularly like first and last... but the first one, is it a little bit tilted? I keep tilting my head to look at it..

The beauty of HDR is the three dimensional effect that it can produce from certain types of pics. Your pics Peter are outstanding with regard to subject (very 3-dimensional) and your expert eye.

I love the way HDR give the 3D look and you have really used it to complement the machines and bring them out of the
picture

#3 is my favorite it really makes the machine stand out and speak to you

What camera/lens combo are you useing?

I don't normally like HDR, but these work for me, Peter.

Peter,

your HDR treatment works very well with these. As has been mentioned, it really gives the machinery a 3D feel and really brings them out and jump at you :D

cheers,

André

If these are your first attempts Stubbsy, I 'll be interested to see some images when you've half mastered HDRs! They are wonderful. It's amazing how much fine detail gets squeezed into an HDR image. Old machinery lends itself to this type of photography, and you've done well.

Ozi.

Excellent Peter,
never thought a lathe could look so good !
Thanks for inspiring me to try HDR on something other than landscapes (not that the landscape guys arn't doing some brilliant work) but I just love the 3 D effect you have achieved. I also appreciate the before and after glimpse as it has really given me a clear picture (excuse the pun) of what to aim for .

I need to see these on a bigger screen but from what I can tell they really sing. Nicely done, and a good example of using HDR to enhance an image.

Good shots and nice subject, trick to good HDR's is not getting the halo around the subject. Its hard sometimes, but layer blending and photoshop masks help a lot.

HDR works particular well in my opinion for this type of subject matter.

Speaking of revisiting images....isn't it great you still have the originals to work with  And as well for future use. With digital we tend to take large amounts of pics and dispose of large amounts often times removing some future possiblities of enhancements.
