Video frame grab from Canon 5DMKII

I was watching a video that I did of my niece (done with Canon 5DMKII) and I had to pause the video to do something else, I was so surprised by the quality of the paused image that I "captured it as a jpg file.

I thought that this was amazing clarity for a video frame grab (if that's the correct term for it)

Pretty impressive! I'm sure I could find a legitimate use for one at work - I'd be keen to stimulate the economy to get one!

:agree: nice quality video! Probably could be printed postcard size without probs? What's the original resolution of the video?

Stuart,

Very bloody nice, and the bokeh demonstrated in this shot is something that cannot be matched by any other sub-$20K camcorder on the market.

The fact that you can use your good Canon glass (and Nikkor glass on the D90) is why this form of video is going to change the market.

Chris, this is a most impressive camera.

That's a good question, I have no idea what resolution the video is so I went back to the video and used my Mac 'Grab" application to capture the entire frame and imported it into Photoshop. I checked the resolution and image size and the results were 1618 x 910 with a resolution of 240. I am not sure if I captured 100% of the image and I am not sure if the resolution was determined by my PS settings or is an actual video resolution?

Below is the entire frame at 50% of the original size (resized to keep Gary happy).

Thanks Chris.

I don't know much about the video business Gary but I know that the lighting was crappy and the camera was hand held and I was using the contrast focus method (whatever it is called by Canon) and I loved the outcome.

I guess on the positive side, I was using the Canon 85L which is probably responsible for the bokeh.

The video frames are 1920x1080 (2 megapixels).

I've got some shots of elephant seals that I've been displaying full-screen as part of a slideshow. I've been hearing appreciate murmurs from the audience (e.g. to an action shot of a seal barking) which transform to gasps when I "unpause" the video. The audience is surprised by the shift and the realisation that they weren't looking at a still shot. It's a bit of a gimmick, but it's been fun to play with.
(yes my 5DmkII got a lot of use on this last trip :))

Nice job on this shot!
