Two shots from a short outing today scouting some possible photo spots on Lake Macquarie. Both processed using Nik Silver Efex Pro.

I like the way you are thinking Peter.
The boat shot seems to need somthing........for me at least.
I like the composition of the Pelicans but not the actual warf they are on. If that makes sense.

Thanks for the comments gentlemen.
Colin - I have another shot where there's some froeground grass for the boat shot so I'll see what that does to the image.

Really nice shots, but I agree something's missing in the boat image, though it took awhile of thinking to work out what!
But.. I think it's simply lacking something to look at. It's strange to say there's nothing to look at when there's so much in the shot, but it's like a beautiful background without a foreground subject upon which to focus. Maybe zooming into perhaps the clump of boats on the right would have given more interest as then the landmass behind them would have been larger, giving more contrast so that the boats in front could stand out, plus then reduced amount of water and sky would have been a bit more balanced as right now the tiny boats seem lost sandwiched between all that mid-tone sea and sky. Otherwise just cropping a centimetre top and bottom might help?
I really like the Pelican one, especially how the shape of the jetty and it ending a way in from the left side seems echoed by the land that juts out and then ends a short way from the right side. I thought that was a lighthouse there where the prominent land ended but it could be a yacht sailing past, either way it kind of nicely of balances the shot and would even more so if you trimmed the left to just past where that other bit of darker land is. I like the starkness of the jetty in this as were it a dark brown one it would have been lost amidst the water.

OK I've gone back and reworked #1. Here is the result, including a bit of foreground interest.
Plus, for Frankie, a tighter shot on the boats (there's a colour version of this shot
HERE):

Boats now works nicely. Almost three shots in one, the grass, the boats and then the sky. Nice
