At short notice we had a Helicopter Search and Rescue demonstration just off our ship in Sydney harbour. This was the second attempt since Christmas to do this as last time the helicopter suffered some kind of breakdown. I didn't know choppers were so emotional.

Here is the gallery;

The helicopter is an SH-70B2 Seahawk of 816 Squadron from the Naval Air Station, Nowra, (HMAS Albatross). The guy in the water is a volunteer from my ship (HMAS Manoora).

Sorry for not telling you Birdy, but i only had a short notice of it happening, otherwise i would have phoned you to let you know it was going ahead.

(Other interesting link - http://www.navy.gov.au/aircraft/seahawk.htm )

Photos were shot with Nikon 70-300G and the 18-70 kit lens.

Great photos...

I love 161... It demonstrates the power of the chopper... "Eye of the Storm"???

Also like 160, 166 (for its completeness) and 170 (for putting it into context)

Hope to see you tomorrow...

Steve,

That's a great series - thanks for sharing with the rest of us.

For me 161, 164, 167, 169 and 170 tell the story.

Now of course if you could have got the chopper to hover 5 metres lower and moved the ship to the right a bit then 170 would be perfect  - but that's me trying to be amusing. For me this is a wonderful bit of photojournalism of an event that enables me to share in it.

Great stuff!

Cheers,
Gordon.

Steve all of the shots are good telling the story but the only one that I can see that shows action is 166 - the blurring of the blades

Great Pics Steve, Loved them all and pitty shutter speed wasn'y abit slower to get the motion in the rotors but still great all of them.
I have trouble at times with shutter speeds and focussing as my lens are not that fast at focussing but your pics are all nice and sharp, clear and you have done well mate.
Cheers

They're all great shots. I also really like 170 with the bridge etc. in the background. Something a bit different.

Steve - 161 and 166 are my pick of the bunch, 170 would be awesome if that damn helicopter pilot knew how to get a bit higher up (or you got down on the ground I guess)
