Auto Italia Canberra 2009

First posting - so be gentle. There was a display on today outside Old Parliament House of Italian cars, motorbikes and scooters. I have never seen so many Ferraris or Ducatis (and Vespers and Alfa Romeos and Fiats and Lancias and Maseratis) in the one place at the one time. Hate to add up how much they would have been all worth.

Anyways, got lots of good pictures and thought I would post a couple here for comment. It was a tough choice getting them down to four. So enjoy, and comments are welcome.

I've been to that event many times, myself. Taken down various Alfas over the years, even won a prize back in maybe 1989 or 1990.

So, they've moved it from the shores of Lake Hurley Burley? It used to be on the northern/western shoreline, and around 2000 (I guess) on the southern side.

Nice shots of the bikes; well done.

As long as they had someone cranking up a nice La Mazorcco for some good espresso, would have been a near perfect day.

I like the second shot the best.

great to see a new CBR fellow posting images from this Italian Motorshow.
I used to know about it and actually went to see it for the last two years.
This year I have missed the event - do not really know why I did'nt know
why and when it was happenening. (bummer)
Last year they had a very pretty model posing around and on one of the Vespas.

There were two lovely young women in rather skimpy black dresses and one did pose on a Vespa for a photographer. No idea if they were paid models or not, but managed to sneak one shot in but it didn't turn out well. The photographer was giving the girl a good talking too - in a very positive way after the photos as well so not sure what the relationship was there.

2007's show was at Grevillea Park which is on the north side of the lake near Russell, while 2008 was at Old Parliament House lawns. Its a much better venue and there was quite a few people there. (Hence lots of close up shots I ended up taking as I was trying to avoid people.) However, this was my first time going to one of these auto shows. Will have to make an effort for the German one, and I think there is an English one as well sometime during the year.

Appreciate everyone's feedback so far - don't stop!

my pick is #2, not 100% why since i don't normally like minimalistic pictures but this one strikes a chord with me!

As for Italian cars, it takes...a...certian type of person to love and cherish them (especially Alfas)

Tell me about it. I've owned something like 14 Alfas through the years, as well as one Maserati. I've also held senior positions in Alfa Owners' clubs in Sydney, California, and Texas, and we've attended similar days in Texas and Arkansas as well, and even scored some close up time with one of the rarest italian cars you;re ever likely to see, the Gordon Keeble.

lol, my wife cried for a week when we sold her 147 GTA. its an emotional connection that is inexplicable.
i really like the first photo although i dont think you nailed the focus, (or the downsizing has effected the sharpness).

I was way out of my element photographing cars and didn't get much to speak of... but it was a nice event anyway.

Do you know when the German event is on? Wouldn't mind going to that one either.

This is the first time that I have gone and shot cars. Normally its something a little faster and higher (aircraft) so I was definitely out of my comfort zone. However, that was part of the challenge - doing something out of my comfort zone. I got to enjoy some very fine vehicles and had a lovely couple of hours in the process.

According to the Canberra VW Club this years German Autofest will be in September, on the 20th I think.

Focus was fine. Downsizing & sharpness has affected things. Plus it wouldn't surprise me if flickr compresses the images further. Working on Lightroom at the moment to figure out its web galleries and will eventually create my own gallery using it and some web space i have rather than use flickr.

I like it too A few other people have seen some of the shots and that one always gets a favourable comment. The only thing I can see with it that could be "wrong" is that I don't have all of the grill in the picture - its cut off on the right. However, I don't know if it would work with all the grill in. The badge seems to counterbalance things for some reason, or diverts you eye from it. Regardless, it just, well, works.


If people are desperate to look at some of the other shots, have a look at the set I have on flickr - hopefully not breaking any rules with that link.

a few years ago they had a German motor show on the lawns in front of the old Parliament House in Canberra.
Jee, did they have some very very sexy Porsche Boxters in Blue Perl Duco
Yummy, absolutely yummy.
By the way, if you want to see very snazzy Ferraris and Masseratis and Lambourghinis and all sorts of very hot cars - go to the internantional motor show (Internationale Autombil Austellung auf dem Frankfurter Messegelaende) in Frankfurt.

Look it's just a 24hour flight - costs a bit, but you won't regret
