And while I was out I practiced a bit of DOF with the Sigma

I like these for their composition but the moon may be tad overexposed. You may need to go back to the RAW and see whether you can fetch some more detail out of your files...maybe exposure blend with single exposure...

It is, but therein lies the problem.

First off, we need to understand that the moon is a very bright object in the sky. Even though the sky may be dark, we need to remember that its source of illumination is still the sun. Sunny 16 applies, if you want to correctly expose the moon.

In these images though, we have the landscape components, which are not being illuminated by the sun. I suspect the light painting or a handheld strobe might not quite be up to the mark either, and thus a decision needs to be taken as to just where the choice for acceptable exposure lies.

HDR may be an appropriate course of action here. btw, I like the second of these; that is a very pleasing composition for me.

What I found was, as Gary say's, you either get the moon or the foreground - not both.
